The field of elder law and Medicaid deals with those laws and regulations affecting senior citizens and persons with disabilities.  As of the year 2000, more than 12 percent of the population was over the age of 65; by the year 2050, that number is expected to rise to 20 percent.  Many senior citizens end up incurring hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical and long-term care bills before their death.  While the state and federal government provide assistance, obtaining that assistance is often difficult, requiring sometimes years of planning.  Furthermore, once the government provides assistance it often seeks reimbursement through your estate when you die.
